A former Bethany man and two Orleans County residents were murdered in separate, but related, shootings at Lakeside Memorial Hospital in Brockport and at a house in Canandaigua early Saturday. Another woman was also murdered and a fifth person was in serious condition at a Rochester hospital.
A suspect, believed to be a disgruntled former Lakeside employee, was in custody.
The rampage began about 5 a.m. when the suspect drove to Lakeside on Route 31 and found Mary Silliman, a nursing assistant at Lakeside's long-term care facility, outside, apparently on a break, law enforcement sources familiar with the case said. Silliman, 23, lived in Albion and was a former Corfu resident.
Moments later, Randall Norman, 41, of Holley, and his girlfriend, were driving by and saw the suspect dragging Silliman across the parking lot, the sources said.
Norman, his girlfriend and Sillman were then shot. Norman and Silliman were killed. Norman's girlfriend, whose name was not released, then drove herself to Brockport Police Department. Police said she arrived at 5:11 a.m.
She was in serious condition at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
As police converged on Lakeside a desperate manhunt began for the killer.
In a press statement, Lakeside CEO Michael Stapleton said the hospital was placed on ”code black” lockdown while the search intensified and spread to surrounding counties. The hospital's emergency room remained open.
Because both victims were from Orleans County, investigators there were immediately notified, Orleans Major Crime Task Force Supervising Investigator Joseph Sacco said.
”Initially we were looking for the suspect involved because we believed he may be in this area,” Sacco said. ”We were searching all over. But apparently he had a plan.”
Police believe the suspect drove to Ontario County, to a house in a neighborhood just south of the city of Canandaigua.
Sources said the suspect may have worked at a nursing home in Farmington and had a grudge against a female employee there. He burst into the home and killed the woman, along with her husband, a native of Bethany. Their names were not released.
Two teenagers, believed to be the couple's children, were home at the time, Ontario County sheriff's deputies said. They were not injured.
Genesee County sheriff's deputies became involved when they had to notify the man's parents, an elderly couple still living in Bethany.
The suspect was later captured in Rochester. Police did not reveal details but sources said the man was believed to be from the Hilton area.
Norman, a father of three, lived at 10 Orchard St. in the village of Holley. Silliman's address was not available.
Lakeside's CEO Stapleton released a statement about Silliman:
”The staff is mourning the loss of Mary Silliman, a 23-year-old certified nursing assistant from Albion who was employed at Lakeside Beikirch Long-Term Care Center. During Mary's brief time within the system, those who worked closest with Mary described her as warm, kind and compassionate towards the residents of Lakeside Beikrich Care Center. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mary's family and friends, as well as to the families and friends of the other victims of this morning's tragedy."
