Welcome to the first round of the NYS boys basketball tournament, the Far West Regionals where Section 5 meets Section 6.

3:24 p.m. Section 5 has had a rough day thus far, with both Houghton and Mynderse falling to its Section 6 rival already.

In the Class D opener, Maple Grove defeated Houghton 52-36 then previously undefeated Mynderse was routed by Middle College 96-50 in the Class C contest.

Here's the starting line-up for both squads: For the "away" team Batavia — even though geographically Batavia is closer to Buff State than Olean — Ryan Funke, Andrew Hoy, Josh Budlong, Coco Irvin and justin Washington.

For the Huskies, Ryan Funke, Ryan Loliier, Luois Proto, Joe Palumbo and Kevin Stevens.

3:30 p.m. Coco gets the opening bucket but Olean answers with two by two different Ryans — Lollier and Carney. Buddy Brasky calls a timeout and gets into Washington face. Let's see if the freshman responds.

3:36 p.m. Budlong nails a '3' as Batavia regains the lead. Hoy adds to the lead, making it a 7-4 lead. Carney gets a bucket with the shot clock winding down for Olean's third field goal of the period. 1:27 remains in the first.

3:39 p.m. Batavia will have the final possession of the quarter. Hoy puts up a jumper, but it hits off the front of the rim just before the buzzer. At the end of one, Batavia leads 7-6.

3:41 p.m. Whew! This place is a pressure-cooker! Media row is packed and after the first two Section 5 teams were defeated pretty handily, I think there's a little added pressure on the Devils to represent the greater Rochester area.

Batavia's done a nice job on the boards, limiting Olean to one opportunity.

3:44 p.m. Washington answers Brasky's call to action, driving to the bucket for a hard layup and foul to get the first score of the second quarter.

3:45 p.m. Coco picks up his first foul, getting a bumping foul call on Palumbo, who makes both free throws to make it a one point game again.

3:47 p.m. Proto gets Olean's first field goal of the second quarter, a '3'.

Coco drives on the ensuing possession as Stevens picks up his second foul. The senior goes a pefect 2-for-2 from the line to tie the game at 11.

3:49 p.m. With three minutes to go, we're still tied up at 11.

3:51 p.m. After almost forcing Olean into a shot clock violation, Hoy races down the floor and gets a runner in the lane and is fouled. Batavia leads 13-11.

Coco picks up his second foul on the defensive end and will send the rest of the half on the bench.

At the end of the first half, Batavia leads 13-11.

3:56 p.m. Well, this is certainly different than the blow-outs Batavia has had in its last two games.

Hoy and Irvin each has four first-half points. Carney has four for the Huskies.

4:05 p.m. Back, ready for second half action here at a jam-packed media row. Batavia gets a turnover to start the half.

4:07 p.m. The Blue Devils are pushing the pace to start the third scoring back-to-back buckets in the first 55 seconds of the half. Olean calls a timeout as Budlong goes to the line.

The senior guard goes a perfect 2-for-2.

4:09 p.m. Stevens goes to the line, making both shots, as Olean gets on the board for the first time in the third with about six minutes to go.

Hoy answers to a driving lay-up. He get the bucket and the foul. Again the junior misses the extra point try.

4:13 p.m. Batavia was on a 7-2 run but Olean has fought back in it.

4:15 p.m. Over the last 3:30, Olean has outscored the Blue Devils 8-2. After a Batavia timeout, the Devils lead 24-21 with 2:34 to play.

4:17 p.m. Out of the timeout, Washington makes a great drive to extend Batavia's lead then gets a shot block on the defensive end.

Batavia has gone ona 4-0 mini-run out of the timeout.

With 27 seconds to go, Batavia leads 28-22 after a Proto runner.

4:20 p.m. Here we are folks — one quarter to decide if Batavia is headed back to Glens Falls! The Devils go into the fourth ahead 28-23.

4:21 p.m. Hoy gets another driving lay-up to fall and gets the foul call. This time he makes the free throw as Batavia goes ahead 31-23.

4:23 p.m. There's been some good efforts on the defensive end by some other Batavia's cast members like Ryan Funke and Ryan Pyatt.

4:24 p.m. Batavia's starting line-up is back on the floor.

4:25 p.m. Six minutes to go, Batavia up 31-24. Washington picks up his second foul as Batavia is one foul away from sending the Huskies into the shooting bonus.

4:49 p.m. Carney gets the first bucket of the quarter for Olean. The Huskies are pushing up their defensive, picking up Batavia almost all the way at the end of the court.

Batavia starts to pull away after back-to-back buckets by Washington and Coco. With four minutes to go, Batavia leads by 10.

4:31 p.m. Batavia's student cheer section is out in force here in the 7-1-6. During another timeout, the "the Blue Zoo" goes through several of its notorious cheers.

4:34 p.m. Batavia was able to reach the shooting bonus first as Olean sends Hoy to the line. He goes 1-for-1 with three minutes to play.

Carney answers with a '3' from the top of the key to make it a 6-point game.

The senior has scored all of his team's points this quarter.

4:37 p.m. The senior finds the bottom of the net again, pulling Olean within three, 36-33, with two minutes to play.

Hoy is fouled on the ensuing possession, but Hoy again is cold from the line.

Palumbo get a driving lay-up for Olean, making it a one point game, 36-35.

Coco is fouled on the next Batavia possession and is true from the line, giving Batavia a three-point lead with 1:19 to play.

4:42 p.m. Batavia works the shot clock, getting off one shot. It misses, but Washington comes up with the huge rebound. Olean now has to foul to extend the game. They foul Hoy. He makes both shots as Batavia goes ahead 40-37.

4:43 p.m. Hoy is called for a foul on Carney with 18 seconds to play. Carney misses the second and Batavia gets the rebound. The Blue Devils get the ball down the court to Funke, who is fouled. Funke misses the first as Batavia takes a timeout. With 7.6 seconds to go, Batavia leads 40-38.

4:47 p.m. Washington comes up with another crutial rebound after Funke's second miss. He is then fouled with 5.6 seconds left. He misses both.

4:48 p.m. Olean heaves up a Hail Mary but it well short as Batavia wins 40-38 to advance to the state tournament!
